Regulators Say Petroglyph Energy Must Prove Plan Works

160 miles south of Denver, in the Raton basin that contains rich oil drilling area, state regulators say Petroglyph Energy must prove that a plan to prevent the flow of methane into water wells by creating a barrie of water. Some of the area’s water wells have become saturated with methane gas that is thought to be caused by gas drilling. Petroglyph CEO Paul Powell said gas will find its way into a void, and “if the void is full of water, there isn’t room for gas to migrate through it.”

The U.S. Geological Survey has been asked by U.S. Rep. John Salazar to evaluate the water in the Raton basin area and evaluate the formations to determine if the problems of the poisoned water and explosions at an area couple’s water well and at another home in the area were caused by gas drilling.
