Fire, Real Estate and other Big Island News

Even paradise has fires. There was one fire last Sunday (January 3, 2010) in Hawaiian Acres on the Big Island of Hawaii. An empty one-story house caught fire and collapsed by the time firemen got there about 30 minutes later! Firefighters had fully extinguished the fire by 9:45 p.m Capt. Allyn Albrechtson, of the Keaau Fire Station says that the loss is estimated to be about $90,000. Someone reported the fire on Road 11, off of Road D, at 8 p.m. Robert Driver owns the 20-by-40-foot house. It was totally engulfed in flames and had fallen in on itself by the time got there, Albrechtson said.
Two west Hawaii ranch real estate property fires were still to burning on Monday at Tom Pace’s Hokukano Ranch and Kealakekua Ranch. Battalion Chief Dennis Iyo said the fires were both within the firebreaks, though. Iyo said the fire at Hokukano Ranch was “closer to being extinguished.” That fire that had been re-ignited on Friday was it originally reported Dec. 25. Times are tough everywhere! On the Big Island of Hawaii school meals are probably the cheapest grinds in town, but prices are going up today. Kids will have to pay as much as 76 percent more. The prices for breakfast will go up as much as 171 percent! As an aside if you are looking for some Big Island Real Estate then I do suggest this particular firm, they are solid.
The Big Island’s Department of Education officials say they have to do it to fight the state’s big-time budget shortfall. The department spent $31 million last year and $27 million in the 2007-08 school year on the lunches. That includes the employee wages, and also electricity, kitchen equipment, as well as all the ingredients.According to DOE school food services director Glenna Owens, it currently costs about $4.40 to feed each student lunch. Food must be paid for—even in Hawaiian paradise, some of the top real estate on the planet!

Keith Robinson has dedicated himself to the preservation of the culture as well as the ecology of Niihau, one of the main islands in state of Hawaii. He has spent a long time trying to preserve endangered plant species of the Islands, especially on the aforementioned island. He is known for wearing with faded jeans and a green hard hat, and for carrying a pistol. He has said that this has been his practice because he needs protection from marajauna farmers whom he stumbles upon from time to time in his work with plants.
For their part, the Robinson family has charged itself with defending Niihau from losing its identity through encroachment from the outside world. The natives however, do leave the island to visit Kaui from time to time to avoid the worst of its droughts, to attain medical care, or to attend school. You cannot drive an automobile on the isle, so you will not see someone speeding around with a Nissan or whatever.
Keith Robinson’s dedication to his environmental work in Hawaii is hard, if not impossible to dispute. His influence upon the inhabitants of Kaui is perhaps a little more dubious. He has said that he has spent millions in the course of his work and has compared his struggles to the Waco disaster and Ruby Ridge. He has threatened to defend his island with force, if it comes to that. I reside in Seattle and in the mile high city of Denver which has a lot of excellent skiing in it’s own right but nonetheless, once a year, the Ski Club plans for at least one ski trip overseas.
